A summary of the 110km course:
The 110 kilometre SRAM Tour de Ranges cycle event starts in the bustling rural town of Clevedon, situated 25 kilometres south of Auckland City.
Cyclists will commence the race outside the Clevedon Showgrounds. From there they will make their way along a flat section of Monument Road for 3.3 kilometres before they hit the first of the two major climbs. The climb is split into two sections separated by a 500 metre plateau, allowing cyclists to find their legs. With an average gradient of 5.8%, cyclists will wind their way up the hill before casually descending into the region of Hunua. The following 15 kilometres is undulating to flat and will allow cyclists to take in the breathtaking scenery of the Hunua Ranges. Upon completing the long flat straights of Paparimu, cyclists will climb a casual elevation of 150 metres.
The following five kilometre section is undulating but fast. A 16 kilometre section of road winds itself around the southern outskirts of the Hunua Ranges. Cyclists do not want to miss the spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf as they pass through the halfway mark of the race.
After descending into the township of Kaiaua, the following 13 kilometre section winds itself around the Hauraki Gulf Coastline. Cyclists may want to position themselves for the green jersey sprint which will be at the 70km mark, just outside the Waharau Regional Park entrance way. As soon as cyclists leave the coast they will need to negotiate a short, sharp 700 metre climb. After the long flat sections of the coast this hill will come as a surprise to most riders. The following 14 kilometre section takes cyclists along an undulating route inland, past Tapapakanga Regional Park and the turnoff to Orere Point. After 86 kilometres cyclists will begin the events designated climb – Snake Hill. Although this hill is only 920 meters long it has an average gradient of 7.4%. Cyclists will cautiously make their way down the technical descent of Snake Hill before entering Kawakawa Bay.
A short 500 metre climb awaits riders as they leave the seaside settlement. Follows is a fast, undulating section which takes cyclists back towards the finish line in Clevedon.
30km course:
The 30km SRAM Tour de Ranges event also commences from the Clevedon Showgrounds. This route is flat to undulating to cater for the more recreational rider.
